Why "AI-Powered" Has Become Meaningless

The Six Questions That Reveal Real AI from Marketing Hype
Before scheduling a demo with any dental AI vendor, get answers to these six questions. A vendor who can't answer them clearly is selling you a label.
1. What training data was used, and how large is it?
Legitimate AI systems are trained on specific datasets. For diagnostic AI: "We trained on 3.2 million annotated radiographs from 40 partner institutions with ground truth established by board-certified radiologists." For scheduling AI: "Our model was trained on appointment history from 12,000 dental practices over 7 years."
Vague answers—"our extensive proprietary dataset"—are red flags. Sample sizes matter. A model trained on 50,000 radiographs will not perform like a model trained on 3 million.
2. How was the AI validated, and do you have peer-reviewed evidence?
Rigorous AI validation involves testing on data the model has never seen. For clinical tools, this should include prospective studies where the AI's performance is measured against human clinicians under real clinical conditions.
Overjet published a prospective multi-site study in Journal of the American Dental Association (2022) showing their caries detection AI achieved 94% sensitivity with radiologist-level specificity. Sales demos show you the finished product. The gap between "demo day" and "the AI is actually working in my practice" is where promises die. Ask for a detailed implementation timeline, the internal resources required from your team, and specifically what happens during the first 30 days.

6. What are the real costs, including switching costs?

- Training costs for additional staff

Ask for a complete 3-year total cost of ownership estimate in writing. Include the cost of data migration if you ever want to leave. A platform with a $299/month headline price and no data export capability is a different risk profile than the same price with clean data portability.

Diagnostic AI (Radiograph Analysis)

Key validation question: What personalization signals does the AI use beyond appointment date and name? Generic reminder systems are not AI—they're scheduled email sequences.
Red flag: Any vendor who can't clearly explain what makes their system "AI" versus rule-based automation. The distinction matters for what you pay and what you get.

Treatment Planning AI

Building a Coherent AI Stack
The worst outcomes in dental AI implementation come from buying point solutions that don't talk to each other.
